When we were at design school, perhaps the most memorable lecture was the one where the tutor erased the board and then put a single dot on the board. She then asked, ” What is this..?”. Answers varied from point, dot, bindi, fullstop, starting, ending, beginning…… and so on. She then introduced us to the smallest unit – the point/dot. Then the single point magically transformed into a line, and then shapes and further the forms. Geometry had been consisting of straight lines until then, but the geometry of a circle as a shape and further the curved line, gave it further definition and enigma. MC Escher became our idol and his metamorphosing work continues to inspire till today. Thus even the pavement appears rather than a series of concrete slabs, a tessellated art pattern with curved lines. This is called Design.
